Slide Show and Talk on Historical Railway

Scarborough to Whitby RailwayThe Friends of North Bay Railway, (FONBR), hosted an evening with a slide show on the historic Scarborough to Whitby Railway. The Scarborough and Whitby Railway was well known to many thousands of tourists who spent their holidays on this part of the Yorkshire coast between 1885 and 1965.

The slide show and talk will be given by local historian and author Robin Lidster. Robin has written books on the route of the old railway line from Scarborough to Whitby and has collected many images from along the route. The illustrated talk will cover from the construction of the railway which opened in 1885 through to its demise in 1965 at the hands of Dr Beechings famous axe. Dr Beeching closed many thousands of miles of Britain’s branch lines in order to streamline and make profitable British Rail.

The talk was at The Glass House Bistro, next to the ticket office of the The North Bay Railway station situated in Northstead Manor Gardens opposite Peashom Park. It commenced at 7.30pm on Wednesday 11 Feb and will cost £2. All monies raised went towards the Friends of North Bay Railway. Refreshments were available on the night.

The Friends of North Bay Railway are a voluntary group which supports the maintenance and running of the railway. Members can get involved in all aspects of running the railway including driving one of the two original steam outline locomotives Trtiton and Neptune. The friends group meets regularly to undertake working parties on the railway and welcomes members, both male and female, of all ages, interests and skills to help maintain and run train services. Members also benefit from discounted travel on the railway and refreshments from the Glass House Bistro and ticket office.
